Water is essential for life, but how you drink it matters too. Many people have the habit of drinking water while standing, without realizing the potential harm it can cause to their health. In this blog, we will explore some of the disadvantages of drinking water while standing and why you should avoid it.


1. It Can Cause Arthritis

Drinking water while standing can cause the water to flow down rapidly and accumulate in your joints, leading to joint damage and arthritis in the long run. This is because when you are standing, your body and tissues are in a state of tension and cannot absorb the fluid properly.


2. It Can Damage Your Digestive System

When you are standing and drinking water, the water splashes on your stomach walls and causes erosion and damage to your digestive system. It can also harm your stomach wall and gastrointestinal tract, and affect the sphincter between your stomach and esophagus, leading to heartburn or acid reflux.




3. It Does Not Quench Your Thirst

Drinking water while standing does not quench your thirst effectively, as you tend to drink more water than required. This can lead to overhydration or water intoxication, which can cause headaches, nausea, confusion, or even coma in severe cases. It is better to sit down and sip water slowly to hydrate yourself properly.

4. It Impairs Your Kidney Function

Drinking water while standing does not allow your kidneys to filter the water well, as it passes down too quickly without much filtration. This can cause the impurities to remain in your blood and bladder, and increase the risk of urinary tract infections or kidney damage. You should sit down and drink water to allow your kidneys to function optimally.

Drinking water while standing can trigger wrong responses in your nervous system, as it puts your body and muscles in a state of tension and stress. This can make you feel out of sync with nature and affect your mood and mental health. You should sit down and drink water to relax your nervous system and feel calm.

حدیث نمبر: 1637

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ هُوَ ابْنُ سَلَامٍ أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَزَارِيُّ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ سَقَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ زَمْزَمَ فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ قَالَ عَاصِمٌ فَحَلَفَ عِکْرِمَةُ مَا کَانَ يَوْمَئِذٍ إِلَّا عَلَی بَعِيرٍ

ترجمہ:
 ہم سے محمد بن سلام بیکندی نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہمیں مروان بن معاویہ فزاری نے خبر دی، انہیں عاصم نے اور انہیں شعبی نے کہ عبداللہ بن عباس (رض) نے ان سے بیان کیا، کہا کہ میں نے رسول اللہ ﷺ کو زمزم کا پانی پلایا تھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پانی کھڑے ہو کر پیا تھا۔ عاصم نے بیان کیا کہ عکرمہ نے قسم کھا کر کہا کہ نبی کریم ﷺ اس دن اونٹ پر سوار تھے۔     

Translation:
Narrated Ibn Abbas (RA): 
I gave Zam-zam water to Allahs Apostle ﷺ and he drank it while standing. Asia (a sub-narrator) said that Ikrima took the oath that on that day the Prophet ﷺ had not been standing but riding a camel.
Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Sit down and drink." (Hadith Muslim) and also said: "None of you should drink while standing; and if. anyone forgets, he must vomit."

Drinking water while standing may seem convenient or harmless, but it can have serious consequences for your health in the long run. It can cause arthritis, digestive problems, thirst imbalance, kidney issues, and nervous system disorders. Therefore, you should always sit down and drink water in a proper posture to enjoy its benefits and avoid its drawbacks.
